Middle School Vision Statement:

The Harborlight Middle School is a learning institution where each student is provided with an innovative and superior education that instills integrity and independence while promoting personal achievement in a dynamic and challenging world.

Middle School Philosophy Statement:

The Harborlight Middle School purpose is to provide students with a program that will help them become responsible, independent, and well-balanced citizens. To accomplish this, we have developed comprehensive and specialized curricula that equip students with the skills and knowledge that are essential in preparing for high school and life in an ever-changing society.

The Harborlight Middle School assists each individual in making a complete transition from elementary school. In accomplishing this, the Middle School Program continues the preparation of each individual in the fundamental process and challenges the student to move beyond. The Middle School helps students develop an increased degree of independence, with an emphasis placed on responsible performance. The Middle School thus serves well as a unique bridge between elementary school and high school.

The Harborlight Middle School believes that fairness, a challenging work environment, a sense of comfort in the classroom, and in a good rapport between student and teacher are essential components in getting the most out of our students. We are dedicated to the task of providing for intellectual, moral, physical, social, and emotional development of each Middle School student.

The Harborlight Middle School believes that respect and courtesy are the essentials upon which real growth takes place. These values are particularly important to develop during the middle school years. We take pride in the respect and courtesy that our students show themselves, each other, and our School, and the comfortable and safe environment that develops along with these principles.

The Harborlight Middle School teachers use a variety of teaching techniques to stimulate each student’s intellectual curiosity. This curiosity develops in each student the ability to analyse situations, solve problems, and work independently. We strive to see the sense of satisfaction and personal attainment that accompanies achievement and good workmanship in all students.

Establishing a Scholastic Atmosphere

Responsibility and independence are the principal attributes of the Harborlight Middle School students. Challenged to be responsible for the social and physical components of the classroom, students create a welcoming and accepting atmosphere while developing considerate and cooperative relationships. Encouraged to take initiative, Harborlight students exhibit ingenuity, diligence, and self-expression in all aspects of their studies. Moving towards cognitive and personal organization, the students prioritize, plan, and manage their time in both their daily work and with long-term, independent projects.

Education as an “Aid to Life”

In teaching the whole child to become a responsible, independent, resourceful adult, a Harborlight education moves beyond the limitations of the classroom. This comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum compels the students to extend their knowledge by using libraries, visiting museums, attending lectures, conducting interviews, and exploring nature. Utilizing the knowledge learned in the classroom and community, the students embrace the possibility of applying academic lessons in authentic situations. In Middle School, Harborlight incorporates traveling, outdoor education, internships, and community service.
